RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH FREE RIDES AND NO DUI’S

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is offering free rides in the city on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to avoid delays as well as discourage drinking and driving.

All Muni lines and routes can be ridden with no cost between 8 p.m. Dec. 31 and 5 a.m. Jan. 1, 2018, but Clipper card holders should be careful to avoid using their cards or they could still be charged a fare.

Service on cable car routes will be provided by buses after 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, as will service on the F-Market & Wharves line.

Owl service will be doubled on a number of routes, while additional Muni Metro shuttles will run from West Portal to Fourth and King streets until 2:15 a.m. and between Embarcadero and West Portal until 5 a.m.

In addition, BART will run additional service until roughly 3 a.m., but trains to and from the East Bay will stop at either the Embarcadero or Montgomery stations, but not both.

Trains on the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond lines will stop at the Montgomery station, while trains on the Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont/Warm Springs line will stop at Embarcadero.

After the fireworks show scheduled for midnight, trains headed back to the East Bay on the Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont/Warm Springs lines will not stop at West Oakland.

Caltrain service will also be free from 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. Jan 1.
