LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-MARCH 19, 2020…IT WAS 46 YEARS AGO TODAY AEROSMITH GAVE US THE CLASSIC SINGLE ‘SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE’. IT WAS THE FIRST SONG ON THE ALBUM ‘GET YOUR WINGS’. IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 1973 AND THE BAND WAS ALL LIVING TOGETHER IN 1 HOUSE IN BOSTON. JOE PERRY CAME UP WITH THE RIFF AND STEVEN TYLER MATCHED THE WORDS TO THE RIFF, WHICH REALLY DROVE THE SONG. THIS MIGHT BE THE ONLY SONG CONTAINING BOTH THE WORDS “HURDY GURDY” AND “CONSTIPATION.’ ‘SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE’ WAS ONE OF THE REASONS THIS ALBUM LASTED OVER A YEAR ON BILLBOARD’S TOP 100 ALBUM CHARTS, AND BASICALLY CEMENTED THE BAND’S FUTURE. THE SONG HAS BEEN A STAPLE AT AEROSMITH SHOWS SINCE ‘73, AND HAS BEEN FEATURED ON AEROSMITH COMPILATIONS INCLUDING ‘GREATEST HITS’ (1980) (WHERE THE SONG IS REMASTERED AND 52 SECONDS OF THE SONG IS EDITED OUT AND THE FIRST LINE FROM ONE VERSE IS CHANGED FROM “GOT YOU WITH YOUR COCAINE…” TO “SHADY LOOKING LOSER….” )
HERE’S A KICK ASS LIVE VERSION OF ‘SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE’
