DIO,SKYNYRD,AND FREE

37 YEARS AGO DIO RELEASED THE ALBUM ‘HOLY DIVER’. IT WAS THE DEBUT STUDIO ALBUM FOR THE BAND DIO. RONNIE JAMES DIO HAD JUST LEFT BLACK SABBATH ( FOR THE FIRST TIME) AND PUT THE BAND DIO TOGETHER WITH VINNIE APPICE (WHO ALSO LEFT BLACK SABBATH TO FORM THE BAND DIO).THE GROUP WAS ROUNDED OUT BY JIMMY BAIN ON BASS ( WHO PLAYED WITH DIO IN RAINBOW), AND A YOUNG VIVIAN CAMPBELL, WHO LATER WOULD GO ON TO HUGE FAME IN DEF LEPPARD. THIS IS A KILLER ALBUM. ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE RANKED IT AS 16TH ON THEIR LIST ON THE “100 GREATEST METAL ALBUMS OF ALL TIME”.  HERE’S SOME HOLY DIVER TRIVIA:

-Ronnie James Dio wrote or co-wrote all the songs on the album and produced it as well.

-The album cover features the band’s devil-looking mascot, Murray, whipping a chain at a priest who is bound by chains. However, Ronnie once pointed out that appearances are misleading and the cover could just as well depict a priest killing a devil.

-Following the September 11th attacks, “Holy Diver” was placed on a list of tracks with inappropriate titles.

-The lyrics of “Holy Diver” are about Revelations 12:9, which describes Satan being cast to the earth.

-“Rainbow in the Dark,” the second single from the album, is about an inability to release tremendous potential, and Dio once said it was inspired by his time fronting Black Sabbath

-RJD wanted to cut “Rainbow in the Dark” from the album, thinking it was too poppy and didn’t belong on the album. The rest of the band persuaded him that wasn’t the case.

-The original vinyl release had a photo montage in the liner. It included pictures of Dio during his time with both Rainbow and Black Sabbath.

-The album was certified Gold for sales over 500,000 in 1984, then Platinum for sales over one-million copies in 1989.

HERE’S DIO LIVE FROM THE EDGE IN PALO ALTO !

TWO YEARS AGO IT WAS THE LYNYRD SKYNYRD FAREWELL CONCERT AT SHORELINE. “THE LAST OF THE STREET SURVIVORS TOUR” KICKED OFF ON MAY 4, 2018 IN FLORIDA AND WILL WRAPPED-UP ON OCTOBER 11,2019 IN TENNESSEE. THE 2018 SHOW AT SHORELINE WAS OUTSTANDING WITH A CAPACITY CROWD HANGING ON EVERY NOTE AND ROCKING OUT WITH THE BAND AND TRULY WAS A MAGICAL NIGHT.  SKYNYRD’S CAREER HAS SPANNED OVER 41 YEARS, HALTED FOR A DECADE BY THE 1977 PLANE CRASH THAT KILLED 3 BAND MEMBERS INCLUDING RONNIE VAN ZANT AND STEVE GAINES. SINCE THEN, THE BAND TRAGICALLY LOST ALLEN COLLINS, BILLY POWELL, LEON WILKESON AND HUGHIE THOMASSON.

BUT THE BAND KEEPS ON TICKING LIKE A FINE SWISS WATCH. LYNYRD SKYNYRD SOUNDS AS GOOD AS EVER WITH ORIGINAL MEMBER GARY ROSSINGTON, JOHNNY VAN ZANT, RICKEY MEDLOCKE, MARK MATEJKA, MICHAEL CARTELLONE, JOHNNY COLT, PETER KEYS, DALE KRANTZ ROSSINGTON, AND CAROL CHASE. THIS CURRENT LINE-UP DOES THE SKYNYRD LEGACY PROUD.  THE BAND HAS SOLD OVER 30 MILLION ALBUMS WORLDWIDE AND THEY REMAIN A CULTURAL ICON. THEIR FINAL BAY AREA APPEARANCE ON THE FAREWELL TOUR WAS AUGUST 24, 2019 AT THE CONCORD PAVILION. HERE’S ONE OF LYNYRD SKYNYRD’S BEST, A LIVE VERSION OF SIMPLE MAN (GREAT QUALITY VIDEO)……

AND THE EVENING’S ENCORE AT LAST YEAR’S CONCERT IN THE BAY AREA

ON THIS DATE 50 YEARS AGO FREE RELEASED ONE OF THE GREAT ROCK SONGS OF OUR TIME ‘ALL RIGHT NOW’. THE SONG ACTUALLY CAME ABOUT BECAUSE THE BAND HAD JUST PLAYED A GIG AT A COLLEGE, AND EVERY ONE OF THE GROUPS SONGS AT THE TIME WAS VERY SLOW TEMPOED. DRUMMER SIMON KIRKE EXPLAINED: “All Right Now’ was created after a bad gig in Durham, England. Our repertoire at that time was mostly slow and medium paced blues songs which was alright if you were a student sitting quietly and nodding your head to the beat. However, we finished our show in Durham and walked off the stage to the sound of our own footsteps. The applause had died before I had even left the drum riser. When we got into the dressing room, it was obvious that we needed an uptempo number, a rocker to close our shows. All of sudden, the Inspiration struck (bass player Andy) Fraser, and he started bopping around singing ALL RIGHT NOW… He sat down and wrote it right there in the dressing room. It couldn’t have taken more than 10 minutes”. THE SONG WAS A MEGA-HIT, AND WAS SO SUCCESSFUL, IT MIGHT HAVE ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE EVENTUAL BREAK-UP OF THE GROUP. ACCORDING TO SINGER PAUL RODGERS: “Really it was just a one-off for us, and when the follow-up to ‘All Right Now’ died a death – it was called “The Stealer” – and the album that followed, Fire and Water, from which ‘All Right Now’ was taken, when that didn’t do very well, we took it to heart and the band broke up. So, in an indirect way, ‘All Right Now’ was not very good for the band, I have to say”.

HERE’S A GREAT LIVE VERSION OF ‘ALL RIGHT NOW’

32 YEARS AGO VAN HALEN RELEASED OU812 (PRONOUNCED “OH YOU ATE ONE TOO”). THIS WAS VAN HALEN’S STUDIO ALBUM, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THE SECOND TO FEATURE THE RED ROCKER SAMMY HAGAR  AS THE LEAD VOCALIST. THE GROUP WORKED ON THE RECORD FOR 8 MONTHS, AND FINISHED RECORDING IT JUST ONE MONTH BEFORE ITS RELEASE. THE ALBUM WAS HUGE FOR THE GROUP, SPAWNING 3 HIT SINGLES ‘WHEN IT’S LOVE’  ‘BLACK AND BLUE’ AND ‘FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED’ AND SELLING OVER 6.4 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE. THE ALBUM WAS ALSO DEDICATED TO JAN VAN HALEN, EDDIE AND ALEX’S FATHER, WHO DIED ON DECEMBER 9, 1986 AT THE AGE OF 66. THE INNER LININGS OF THE ALBUM INCLUDE THE WORDS, “THIS ONE’S FOR YOU PA”.  HERE’S VAN HAGAR ON THE “OU812 TOUR”. AN ENTIRE CONCERT FROM JAPAN.

FORTY SEVEN YEARS AGO LED ZEPPELIN RELEASED ONE OF THEIR FEW SINGLE’S IN AMERICA. ‘OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY’ IS THE THIRD TRACK ON THE ALBUM ‘HOUSES OF THE HOLY’ AND WAS THE ALBUM’S FIRST SINGLE. DESPITE THE FACT THE SONG HAS BECOME A STAPLE ON CLASSIC ROCK RADIO STATIONS, IT ONLY REACHED # 51 ON THE CHARTS. HERE’S THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR THE TRACK FROM LED ZEPPELIN

16 YEARS AGO THE BAND JET CAME OUT WITH THE SINGLE ‘ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL’. THIS WAS THE BAND’S FIRST HIT SONG. IT WAS ALSO THE FIRST SONG TO BE USED IN THE POPULAR IPOD COMMERCIALS (REMEMBER THE IPOD ?). IN THE COMMERCIAL A BLACK SHADOW OF A PERSON, LISTENING TO A WHITE IPOD DANCED TO THIS SONG IN FRONT OF COLORFUL BACKGROUNDS. THESE ADS HELPED BOOST SALES OF IPODS AND JET ALBUMS. THIS IS EASILY JET’S MOST SUCCESSFUL SINGLE IN THE U.S. IT  SSELLING OVER 1.3 MILLION COPIES TO DATE.

AND HERE’S THE INFAMOUS IPOD AD FEATURING JET

ELTON JOHN, AC/DC, KISS, & TOM PETTY’S FREEDOM

45 YEARS AGO ELTON JOHN RELEASED THE ALBUM ‘CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY’. THIS WAS ELTON’S NINTH STUDIO ALBUM AND IT WAS HUGE. IT WAS DURING A TIME WHEN EVERYTHING ELTON RELEASE WAS PURE GOLD AND IT TOPPED THE BILLBOARD ALBUM CHARTS FOR SEVEN STRAIGHT WEEKS UPON RELEASE. THE RECORD IS RANKED AT #158 ON “ROLLING STONE” MAGAZINE’S LIST OF “THE TOP 500 GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME”.

FORTY ONE YEARS AGO KISS RELEASED THE ALBUM ‘DYNASTY’. DYNASTY RETURNED KISS TO COMMERCIAL PROMINENCE. IT PEAKED AT  #9 ON THE BILLBOARD TOP ALBUM CHART” AND EARNED INSTANT PLATINUM STATUS. THE ALBUM WAS FUELED BY THE SUCCESS OF THE SINGLE ‘I WAS MADE FOR LOVING YOU’ THE GROUP’S FIRST COLLABORATION WITH SONGWRITER DESMOND CHILD. IRONICALLY, THE DISCO INFECTED TRACK WAS RELEASED AFTER KISS HAD SPENT YEARS RALLYING THE KISS ARMY INTO BATTLE AGAINST DISCO. HERE’S THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FROM KISS

THIRTY FOUR YEARS AGO AC/DC RELEASED THE SOUNDTRACK ALBUM ‘WHO MADE WHO’. IT WAS THE SOUNDTRACK TO STEPHEN KING’S MOVIE ‘MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE’. THE SONG ‘WHO MADE WHO’ WAS WRITTEN SPECIFICALLY FOR THE MOVIE. THE THEME OF ‘MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE’ WAS BUILT AROUND MACHINES COMING TO LIFE AND KILLING PEOPLE. THUS IT WAS VERY APPROPRIATE THAT THE VIDEO FOR THE SONG ‘WHO MADE WHO’ FEATURED A ROBOT BUILDING AN ARMY OF ANGUS YOUNG CLONES. THE ‘WHO MADE WHO’ ALBUM WAS HUGELY SUCCESSFUL COMMERCIALLY, SELLING OVER 5 MILLION COPIES IN THE USA. HERE’S THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR AC/DC’S ‘WHO MADE WHO’

BEFORE YOU READ THIS, THERE’S ONE THING YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND. THE RECORD INDUSTRY IS MADE UP OF SHADY DOUCHEBAGS. CREATIVE ACCOUNTING AND HORRENDOUS, ONE SIDED CONTRACTS HAVE ENABLED RECORD COMPANIES TO KEEP PERFORMERS IN PERPETUALLY IN DEBT FOR YEARS, AND YES, EVEN SOME TOP SELLING ARTISTS. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS. A RECORD LABEL ADVANCES AN ARTIST MONEY AGAINST FUTURE EARNINGS FROM ROYALTIES. BUT BECAUSE THE COST OF THINGS LIKE STUDIO TIME, MARKETING SUPPORT, ACCOUNTING FEES, ADMINISTRATION FEES AND TOUR EXPENSES MUST BE RECOUPED TO THE LABEL BEFORE AN ARTIST EARNS ANY ACTUAL MONEY, MANY ARTISTS NEVER SELL “ENOUGH” TO REPAY THE RECORD COMPANY FOR THE EXPENSES THAT THEY CONTROL. THUS, YOU HAVE AN ARTIST THAT SELLS MILLIONS OF RECORDS AND HE STILL “OWES THE RECORD COMPANY. THIS IS WERE TOM PETTY COMES INTO THE STORY. IT WAS ON THIS DATE IN 1979 TOM PETTY FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY IN AN EFFORT TO FREE HIMSELF FROM SHELTER RECORDS. AT THE TIME OF HIS BANKRUPTCY, PETTY HAD NOTHING TO SHOW FINANCIALLY, DESPITE HAVING 2 HIT ALBUMS TO HIS CREDIT ( 1976 “TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKER’S AND 1978’S ‘YOU’RE GONNA GET IT!’), AND 2 HIT SINGLES ‘BREAKDOWN’ AND ‘AMERICAN GIRL.’ UNHAPPY WITH THE TERMS OF HIS CONTRACT, AND SEEING AN OPPORTUNITY WITH THE SALE OF HIS RECORD COMPANY TO MCA RECORDS, HE DECLARED BANKRUPTCY IN AN EFFORT TO FREE HIMSELF FROM SHELTER RECORDS. THIS WAS AN ACT OF GENIUS ON BEHALF OF TOM PETTY., HAVING A BANKRUPTCY COURT EVENTUALLY RULE HIS CONTRACT WAS EXTREMELY UNFAVORABLE AND RULE IT NULL AND VOID BASED ON THE FACT HE SIGNED IT UNDER DURESS. A WIN FOR THE GOOD GUYS ! HERE’S TOM PETTY FROM 2017. IT WAS PETTY’S 2ND LAST CONCERT BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY AND IT WAS HERE IN THE BAY AREA.

SANTANA, SMOKE, THE REAPER, AND THE BOSS

47 YEARS AGO DEEP PURPLE RELEASED THE SINGLE ‘SMOKE ON THE WATER.’ SURPRISINGLY, THE BAND DID NOT THINK THE SONG WAS A HIT, AND RELEASED 2 OTHER SONGS FROM THE GROUP’S 1972 ALBUM ‘MACHINE HEAD’ AS SINGLES (‘NEVER BEFORE’ & ‘HIGHWAY STAR’). HOWEVER, A YEAR LATER IN 1993, THE RECORD COMPANY RELEASED ‘SMOKE ON THE WATER’ AND IT TOOK OFF. THE SONG HAS BEEN RANKED AS # 494 IN “ROLLING STONE” MAGAZINE’S LIST OF THE TOP 500 SONGS OF ALL-TIME, AND AS HIGH AS NUMBER 4 AS ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFFS OF ALL-TIME BY “TOTAL GUITAR” MAGAZINE.

TO DATE THE SINGLE HAS SOLD CLOSE TO A COMBINED  3 ½ MILLION COPIES AND DOWNLOADS. ON THE STRENGTH OF ‘SMOKE ON THE WATER’ THE ALBUM ‘MACHINE HEAD’ WAS BY FAR THE BAND’S MOST SUCCESSFUL ALBUM COMMERCIALLY. IT STAYED ON THE AMERICAN CHARTS FOR A TOTAL OF 118 WEEKS AND SOLD OVER 2 MILLION COPIES IN THE U.S.A.

THE ALBUM WAS RECORDED UNDER INCREDIBLE CONDITIONS. THE BAND WAS IN SWITZERLAND TO RECORD MACHINE HEAD RIGHT AFTER A FRANK ZAPPA CONCERT, BUT SOMEONE FIRED A FLARE GUN AT THE CEILING DURING THE ZAPPA SHOW AND IT SET THE PLACE ON FIRE. DEEP PURPLE WAS IN THE AUDIENCE FOR THE SHOW, AND LEAD SINGER IAN GILLAN RECALLS 2 FLARES BEING SHOT OFF BY SOMEONE SITTING BEHIND HIM WHICH LANDED IN THE TOP CORNER OF THE BUILDING AND QUICKLY SET IT ON FIRE. FRANK ZAPPA STOPPED THE SHOW AND HELPED ENSURE AN ORDERLY EXIT. THE REST OF THE BAND WAS ACROSS THE STREET AND WATCHED THE FIRE FROM A NEARBY RESTAURANT, AND WHEN THE FIRE DIED DOWN, A LAYER OF SMOKE COVERED LAKE GENEVA, WHICH THE CASINO OVERLOOKED. THE IMAGE GAVE ROGER GLOVER THE IDEA FOR A SONG TITLE ‘SMOKE ON THE WATER’, AND GILLAN WROTE THE LYRICS .

HERE’S WHAT I CONSIDER THE GREATEST RIFF IN ROCK, DEEP PURPLE PERFORMING ‘SMOKE ON THE WATER’

ON THIS DATE IN 1984 BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN RELEASED THE SINGLE  ‘DANCING IN THE DARK’. SPRINGSTEEN WROTE THE SONG AFTER HIS MANAGER DEMANDED A HIT SINGLE FROM HIS ALBUM NEW ALBUM ‘BORN IN THE USA’. AFTER A HUGE ARGUMENT HE SAT DOWN AND WROTE THE TRACK THAT EVENING. THE SONG DEALS WITH HIS FRUSTRATION OF TRYING TO WRITE HIT RECORDS AND HAVING TO WRITE SONGS THAT WILL PLEASE PEOPLE. HIS STRUGGLES POUR OUT IN THE SONG, WHERE HE “FEELS LIKE A HIRED GUN DYING FOR SOME ACTION”. IRONICALLY, THE SONG WAS A HIT SINGLE-THE BIGGEST OF HIS CAREER IN TERMS OF CHART POSITION AND IS ON THE LIST OF THE GREATEST SELLING SINGLES OF ALL TIME. TO DATE THE SONG HAS SOLD OVER 13,500,000 MILLION COPIES. THIS IS THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR THE TRACK, AND YES THAT IS A YOUNG COURTNEY COX THAT WAS PLANTED IN THE AUDIENCE TO PULL UP ON STAGE AND DANCE WITH BRUCE

MAY 21, 1976 BLUE OYSTER CULT RELEASED THE ALBUM WHICH WOULD CHANGE THEIR LIFE. AGENT OF FORTUNE FEATURED ‘(DON’T FEAR) THE REAPER’ WHICH BARELY CRACKED THE TOP 30 BUT HAS REMAINED A STAPLE ON FM ROCK STATIONS. TO DATE THE SONG, ACCOUNTING FOR PHYSICAL SALES AND STREAMING, HAS SOLD OVER 4 MILLION COPIES. THIS IS A GREAT LIVE VERSION FROM 1981

TWELVE YEARS AGO SANTANA ROCKED THE FILLMORE. IT WAS PART OF SANTANA’S 2008 “MULTI-DIMENSIONAL WARRIOR TOUR” HE PLAYED 2 SETS FOR THE CROWD AND AN ENCORE ! ACCORDING TO SETLIST.COM THIS IS WHAT THE FANS SAW AT THE FILLMORE.

DOORS, LETTERMAN, FOO FIGHTERS

TWENTY THREE YEARS AGO THE FOO FIGHTERS RELEASED ‘THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE.’ EVEN THOUGH IT IS OFFICIALLY THE SECOND FOO FIGHTERS ALBUM, IT’S ACTUALLY THE FIRST FOO’S ALBUM TO FEATURE AN ACTUAL BAND. THE DEBUT FOO FIGHTERS ALBUM WAS A GLORIFIED DAVE GROHL SOLO PROJECT. ‘THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE’ SOLD OVER 2 MILLION COPIES, AND WAS DRIVEN BY TRACKS LIKE ‘EVERLONG’ ‘MY HERO’ AND ‘MONKEY WRENCH.’ IT WAS ALSO NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY AWARD IN 1998 FOR ‘THE BEST ROCK ALBUM.’

HERE ARE 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ‘THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE.’

1. The Colour and the Shape has old more more than any other album in the band’s extensive catalog.

2. “My Hero,” the first of the album’s songs to be played live, debuted in concert nearly two years before album was released.

3. “Enough Space” was written because the band needed a good set-opener for their 1995 European tour.

4. Gil Norton pushed Grohl to write more meaningful songs than those he’d written for the first album.

5. The initial sessions for the album were “a bad experience” – especially for drummer William Goldsmith – and produced little in the way of usable material.

6. “Everlong” began life as “a Sonic Youth rip-off.”

7. Most of the finished tracks were re-recorded at a Grandmaster Recorders, a Hollywood studio that previously birthed massive albums by the Black Crowes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stevie Wonder.

8. Goldsmith left the band after learning that Grohl had re-recorded most of his drum parts behind his back.

9. The album’s title was inspired by a bowling pin that the band’s tour manager purchased at a thrift shop.

10. Pat Smear wanted to leave the band before the album was even released – though he eventually stuck around until they could find a suitable replacement.

THIS IS ONE OF THE TRULY GREAT SONGS ON THE CD

FIVE YEARS AGO IT WAS DAVID LETTERMAN’S LAST “LATE SHOW”.  THE SPECIAL MUSICAL GUEST? YOU GUESSED IT, THE FOO FIGHTERS. THE FOO FIGHTERS PLAYED THE SONG ‘EVERLONG’ OVER A TOUCHING MONTAGE OF OLD LETTERMAN CLIPS. THE LATE-NITE LEGEND AND THE BAND MIGHT SEEM LIKE AN UNLIKELY PAIR, BUT THEY SHARE A LONG HISTORY TOGETHER. EVER SINCE LETTERMAN GAVE THEM THEIR TV DEBUT BACK IN 1995,HE AND THE “FIGHTERS OF FOO”AS HE CALLS THEM, HAVE BEEN CLOSE FRIENDS. HERE ARE THE FOO FIGHTERS WITH THE LAST SONG PLAYED ON THE LATE SHOW

SEVEN YEARS AGO THE KEYBOARDIST FOR THE DOORS RAY MANZAREK DIED AT THE AGE OF 74. MANZAREK AND JIM MORRISON CO-FOUNDED THE GROUP, AND RECORDED ON EVERY TRACK OF ALL EIGHT DOORS ALBUMS. BOTH MET IN FILM SCHOOL AT UCLA BUT DIDN’T FORM A BAND WHILE IN SCHOOL. FORTY DAYS AFTER FINISHING SCHOOL, AND THINKING THEY HAD GONE THEIR SEPARATE WAYS, MANZAREK AND MORRISON MET BY CHANCE AT VENICE BEACH. MORRISON SAID HE HAD WRITTEN SOME SONGS AND MANZAREK WANTED TO HEAR THEM. MORRISON SANG ROUGH VERSIONS OF 3 SONGS AND THE TWO CO-FOUNDED THE DOORS ON THE SPOT. HERE ARE THE DOORS PERFORMING GLORIA

BONE BASH VII, AEROSMITH, & CRAZY EYES

HERE’S SOME OFFICIAL LYNYRD SKYNYRD VIDEO (PRO SHOT)

AEROSMITH RELEASED THE SINGLE SWEET EMOTION ON THIS DATE IN 1975. THIS WAS THE SINGLE THAT STARTED A STRING OF SUCCESS FOR THE GROUP THAT LASTED THROUGH THE REST OF THE 70’S AND EARLY 80’S. IRONICALLY, STEVEN TYLER WROTE THIS SONG ABOUT HOW FRUSTRATED HE WAS WITH THE BAND. THE GROUP WAS DOING A LOT OF DRUGS AT THE TIME AND TENSIONS OFTEN RAN HIGH, ESPECIALLY BETWEEN TYLER AND JOE PERRY.

TYLER ATTRIBUTES THE FIRST LINES: “Talk about things that nobody cares, wearing out things that nobody wears” TO JOE PERRY’S GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME ELISSA, AND TO ONE INCIDENT  IN PARTICULAR. ONE NIGHT WHEN TYLER WENT TO PERRY’S HOTEL ROOM LOOKING FOR SOME HEROIN PERRY AND ELISSA SENT HIM AWAY, REFUSING TO SHARE THEIR DRUGS. IN THE AEROSMITH AUTOBIOGRAPHY ‘WALK THIS WAY” TYLER SAID THESE LINES WERE HIS “Angry side talking,” AND ADDS THAT WHEN HE WROTE THE LYRICS “Can’t say baby where I’ll be in  a year ,” HE WAS THINKING, “but it will be at at least 1000 miles away from you!”

THE MUSIC WAS BASED ON A BASS LINE TOM HAMILTON CAME UP WITH. TYLER WROTE THE LYRICS (PERRY WAS KNOWN AS “MR. SWEET EMOTION”) AND THEY PUT THE SONG TOGETHER IN A JAM SESSION. THIS WAS THE FIRST SINGLE RELEASED FROM THE ALBUM ‘TOYS IN THE ATTIC.’ THE SONG STILL REMAINS POPULAR TO THIS DAY WITH OVER 3 MILLION DIGITAL DOWNLOADS. THIS IS THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR ‘SWEET EMOTION.’

PLUS, TODAY IS PHIL RUDD’S BDAY. HE WAS THE DRUMMER FOR AC/DC BEFORE HE WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTING TO “PROCURE A MURDER” THREATENING TO KILL, POSSESSION OF METH, AND POSSESSION OF CANNABIS. THE CHARGES WERE LATER DROPPED. HAPPY 66th BIRTHDAY PHIL. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE ! IN THE ABOVE PICTURE PHIL RUDD IS BACKSTAGE WITH LAMONT. PHIL’S GOT HIS CRAZY EYES GOING FOR THE PICTURE ! HERE’S PHIL WITH AC/DC CIRCA 1980

RIP CORNELL, WEILAND AND QUEEN

TODAY IS THE 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF CHRIS CORNELL. CORNELL, WHO STRUGGLED WITH DEPRESSION FOR MUCH OF HIS LIFE, WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS DETROIT HOTEL ROOM IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF MAY 18, 2017 AFTER PERFORMING AT A SOUNDGARDEN CONCERT EARLIER IN THE EVENING. HIS DEATH WAS RULED A SUICIDE BY HANGING. THIS IS A REPORT THAT RAN IN THE DETROIT FREE PRESS: “According to the records, obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request, a call from Cornell’s wife prompted bodyguard Martin Kirsten to go to the Soundgarden singer’s suite — Room 1136 — to check on him “because he did not sound like he was OK.” Unable to access the locked room, Kirsten kicked open the main door, then did the same with the interior bedroom door. “I went inside and the bathroom door was partially opened, and I could see his feet,” Kirsten told police in a signed statement. The bodyguard loosened the band around Cornell’s neck, then tried to resuscitate the singer by compressing his chest, Kirsten said in his statement. Additional medical personnel were summoned, and Cornell was pronounced dead at about 1:30 a.m., an hour and 15 minutes after Kirsten was first contacted by Cornell’s wife, Vicky Cornell.

CORNELL WAS SUCH A FREAKIN’ TALENT. RIP CHRIS CORNELL. HERE’S CORNELL PERFORMING WITH SOUNDGARDEN

AND IN THE SUPERGROUP AUDIOSLAVE

SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO SCOTT WEILAND OF STP WAS ARRESTED FOR DRUG POSSESSION (HEROIN) ON THIS DAY IN 2003. HE WAS RELEASED ON $10,000 BAIL. WEILAND WAS BUSTED JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT AFTER POLICE PULLED HIM OVER FOR DRIVING WITHOUT HIS LIGHTS ON. A SEARCH OF HIS VEHICLE TURNED UP DRUG PARAPHERNALIA AND SMALL AMOUNTS OF BOTH COCAINE AND HEROIN. HE WAS BOOKED ON 2 COUNTS OF POSSESSION AND WAS RELEASE ON $ 10,000 BAIL. HIS PASSENGER, 29 YEAR OLD JENNIFER LYNN SIRES, WAS ALSO ARRESTED. THE FELONY DRUG CHARGES WERE LATER DROPPED BY A JUDGE, FOLLOWING WEILAND’S STINT IN REHAB. HERE’S WEILAND AND STP LIVE FROM THE HOUSE OF BLUES CIRCA 2000.

ON THIS DATE 44 YEARS AGO QUEEN RELEASED THE SINGLE ‘YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND’ IN THE US. THE TRACK REACHED # 16 ON THE AMERICAN CHARTS AND WAS WRITTEN BY BASSIST JOHN DEACON. THIS IS WHAT DEACON HAD TO SAY IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE BBC ON THE WRITING OF THE SONG: “Well, Freddie didn’t like the electric piano, so I took it home and I started to learn on the electric piano and basically that’s the song that came out you know when I was learning to play the piano. It was written on that instrument and it sounds best on that. You know, often on the instrument that you wrote the song on.”

R.I.P. DIO-KEITH RICHARDS 9 LIVES

MANY CONSIDER RONNIE JAMES DIO ONE OF THE BEST METAL SINGERS OF ALL TIME. HE FRONTED OR FOUNDED SOME OF THE GREAT BANDS OF OUR TIME INCLUDING RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, DIO, AND HEAVEN AND HELL. HE IS ALSO KNOWN FOR POPULARIZING THE “METAL HORNS” HAND GESTURE. TEN YEARS AGO RONNIE JAMES DIO PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 67. THE MOST TRAGIC THING ABOUT DIO’S DEATH FROM STOMACH CANCER IN 2010 IS IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. DIO HAD NOT BEEN TESTED FOR STOMACH OR COLORECTAL CANCER FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS. ( THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RECOMMENDS A COLONOSCOPY EVERY 10 YEARS OVER THE AGE OF 50). GEEZER BUTLER, DIO’S BANDMATE IN SABBATH AND HEAVEN AND HELL STATED IN THE BOOK “LOUDER THAN HELL: THE DEFINITIVE ORAL HISTORY OF HEAVY METAL”:

“All the doctors said if he’d have gone in [for a colonoscopy] a year earlier or two years earlier, they could have treated him, If it had been stage one they could have dealt with it. But by the time Ronnie was diagnosed, he had stage four cancer, which was inoperable. The doctor hinted that it was just a matter of time and there was nothing they could do. It’s really upsetting to think about that, and hopefully it will encourage people who need to have a check up to get it done.”

ONE OF A KIND WITH A BOOMING VOICE AND GREAT STAGE PRESENCE, THERE HAD NEVER BEFORE BEEN ANYONE LIKE RONNIE JAMES DIO, AND THERE NEVER WILL BE AGAIN. HERE’S DIO WITH ONE OF HIS BEST.

ALSO ON THIS DATE TWENTY TWO YEARS AGO TODAY, KEITH RICHARDS WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER HE FELL OFF A CHAIR WHILE REACHING FOR A BOOK IN HIS CONNECTICUT HOME, INJURING HIS CHEST AND RIBS.  AT LEAST THIS TIME HE DIDN’T HURT HIMSELF FALLING HEAD FIRST OFF OF A COCONUT TREE ! HERE’S SOME VINTAGE KEITH RICHARDS WITH THE ROLLING STONES.
