DOORS, LETTERMAN, FOO FIGHTERS

TWENTY THREE YEARS AGO THE FOO FIGHTERS RELEASED ‘THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE.’ EVEN THOUGH IT IS OFFICIALLY THE SECOND FOO FIGHTERS ALBUM, IT’S ACTUALLY THE FIRST FOO’S ALBUM TO FEATURE AN ACTUAL BAND. THE DEBUT FOO FIGHTERS ALBUM WAS A GLORIFIED DAVE GROHL SOLO PROJECT. ‘THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE’ SOLD OVER 2 MILLION COPIES, AND WAS DRIVEN BY TRACKS LIKE ‘EVERLONG’ ‘MY HERO’ AND ‘MONKEY WRENCH.’ IT WAS ALSO NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY AWARD IN 1998 FOR ‘THE BEST ROCK ALBUM.’

HERE ARE 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ‘THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE.’

1. The Colour and the Shape has old more more than any other album in the band’s extensive catalog.

2. “My Hero,” the first of the album’s songs to be played live, debuted in concert nearly two years before album was released.

3. “Enough Space” was written because the band needed a good set-opener for their 1995 European tour.

4. Gil Norton pushed Grohl to write more meaningful songs than those he’d written for the first album.

5. The initial sessions for the album were “a bad experience” – especially for drummer William Goldsmith – and produced little in the way of usable material.

6. “Everlong” began life as “a Sonic Youth rip-off.”

7. Most of the finished tracks were re-recorded at a Grandmaster Recorders, a Hollywood studio that previously birthed massive albums by the Black Crowes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stevie Wonder.

8. Goldsmith left the band after learning that Grohl had re-recorded most of his drum parts behind his back.

9. The album’s title was inspired by a bowling pin that the band’s tour manager purchased at a thrift shop.

10. Pat Smear wanted to leave the band before the album was even released – though he eventually stuck around until they could find a suitable replacement.

THIS IS ONE OF THE TRULY GREAT SONGS ON THE CD

FIVE YEARS AGO IT WAS DAVID LETTERMAN’S LAST “LATE SHOW”.  THE SPECIAL MUSICAL GUEST? YOU GUESSED IT, THE FOO FIGHTERS. THE FOO FIGHTERS PLAYED THE SONG ‘EVERLONG’ OVER A TOUCHING MONTAGE OF OLD LETTERMAN CLIPS. THE LATE-NITE LEGEND AND THE BAND MIGHT SEEM LIKE AN UNLIKELY PAIR, BUT THEY SHARE A LONG HISTORY TOGETHER. EVER SINCE LETTERMAN GAVE THEM THEIR TV DEBUT BACK IN 1995,HE AND THE “FIGHTERS OF FOO”AS HE CALLS THEM, HAVE BEEN CLOSE FRIENDS. HERE ARE THE FOO FIGHTERS WITH THE LAST SONG PLAYED ON THE LATE SHOW

SEVEN YEARS AGO THE KEYBOARDIST FOR THE DOORS RAY MANZAREK DIED AT THE AGE OF 74. MANZAREK AND JIM MORRISON CO-FOUNDED THE GROUP, AND RECORDED ON EVERY TRACK OF ALL EIGHT DOORS ALBUMS. BOTH MET IN FILM SCHOOL AT UCLA BUT DIDN’T FORM A BAND WHILE IN SCHOOL. FORTY DAYS AFTER FINISHING SCHOOL, AND THINKING THEY HAD GONE THEIR SEPARATE WAYS, MANZAREK AND MORRISON MET BY CHANCE AT VENICE BEACH. MORRISON SAID HE HAD WRITTEN SOME SONGS AND MANZAREK WANTED TO HEAR THEM. MORRISON SANG ROUGH VERSIONS OF 3 SONGS AND THE TWO CO-FOUNDED THE DOORS ON THE SPOT. HERE ARE THE DOORS PERFORMING GLORIA

AEROSMITH RELEASED THE SINGLE SWEET EMOTION ON THIS DATE IN 1975. THIS WAS THE SINGLE THAT STARTED A STRING OF SUCCESS FOR THE GROUP THAT LASTED THROUGH THE REST OF THE 70’S AND EARLY 80’S. IRONICALLY, STEVEN TYLER WROTE THIS SONG ABOUT HOW FRUSTRATED HE WAS WITH THE BAND. THE GROUP WAS DOING A LOT OF DRUGS AT THE TIME AND TENSIONS OFTEN RAN HIGH, ESPECIALLY BETWEEN TYLER AND JOE PERRY.

TYLER ATTRIBUTES THE FIRST LINES: “Talk about things that nobody cares, wearing out things that nobody wears” TO JOE PERRY’S GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME ELISSA, AND TO ONE INCIDENT  IN PARTICULAR. ONE NIGHT WHEN TYLER WENT TO PERRY’S HOTEL ROOM LOOKING FOR SOME HEROIN PERRY AND ELISSA SENT HIM AWAY, REFUSING TO SHARE THEIR DRUGS. IN THE AEROSMITH AUTOBIOGRAPHY ‘WALK THIS WAY” TYLER SAID THESE LINES WERE HIS “Angry side talking,” AND ADDS THAT WHEN HE WROTE THE LYRICS “Can’t say baby where I’ll be in  a year ,” HE WAS THINKING, “but it will be at at least 1000 miles away from you!”

THE MUSIC WAS BASED ON A BASS LINE TOM HAMILTON CAME UP WITH. TYLER WROTE THE LYRICS (PERRY WAS KNOWN AS “MR. SWEET EMOTION”) AND THEY PUT THE SONG TOGETHER IN A JAM SESSION. THIS WAS THE FIRST SINGLE RELEASED FROM THE ALBUM ‘TOYS IN THE ATTIC.’ THE SONG STILL REMAINS POPULAR TO THIS DAY WITH OVER 3 MILLION DIGITAL DOWNLOADS. THIS IS THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR ‘SWEET EMOTION.’

PLUS, TODAY IS PHIL RUDD’S BDAY. HE WAS THE DRUMMER FOR AC/DC BEFORE HE WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTING TO “PROCURE A MURDER” THREATENING TO KILL, POSSESSION OF METH, AND POSSESSION OF CANNABIS. THE CHARGES WERE LATER DROPPED. HAPPY 66th BIRTHDAY PHIL. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE ! IN THE ABOVE PICTURE PHIL RUDD IS BACKSTAGE WITH LAMONT. PHIL’S GOT HIS CRAZY EYES GOING FOR THE PICTURE ! RIP CORNELL, WEILAND AND QUEEN

TODAY IS THE 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF CHRIS CORNELL. CORNELL, WHO STRUGGLED WITH DEPRESSION FOR MUCH OF HIS LIFE, WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS DETROIT HOTEL ROOM IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF MAY 18, 2017 AFTER PERFORMING AT A SOUNDGARDEN CONCERT EARLIER IN THE EVENING. HIS DEATH WAS RULED A SUICIDE BY HANGING. THIS IS A REPORT THAT RAN IN THE DETROIT FREE PRESS: “According to the records, obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request, a call from Cornell’s wife prompted bodyguard Martin Kirsten to go to the Soundgarden singer’s suite — Room 1136 — to check on him “because he did not sound like he was OK.” Unable to access the locked room, Kirsten kicked open the main door, then did the same with the interior bedroom door. “I went inside and the bathroom door was partially opened, and I could see his feet,” Kirsten told police in a signed statement. The bodyguard loosened the band around Cornell’s neck, then tried to resuscitate the singer by compressing his chest, Kirsten said in his statement. Additional medical personnel were summoned, and Cornell was pronounced dead at about 1:30 a.m., an hour and 15 minutes after Kirsten was first contacted by Cornell’s wife, Vicky Cornell.

CORNELL WAS SUCH A FREAKIN’ TALENT. RIP CHRIS CORNELL. HERE’S CORNELL PERFORMING WITH SOUNDGARDEN

AND IN THE SUPERGROUP AUDIOSLAVE

SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO SCOTT WEILAND OF STP WAS ARRESTED FOR DRUG POSSESSION (HEROIN) ON THIS DAY IN 2003. HE WAS RELEASED ON $10,000 BAIL. WEILAND WAS BUSTED JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT AFTER POLICE PULLED HIM OVER FOR DRIVING WITHOUT HIS LIGHTS ON. A SEARCH OF HIS VEHICLE TURNED UP DRUG PARAPHERNALIA AND SMALL AMOUNTS OF BOTH COCAINE AND HEROIN. HE WAS BOOKED ON 2 COUNTS OF POSSESSION AND WAS RELEASE ON $ 10,000 BAIL. HIS PASSENGER, 29 YEAR OLD JENNIFER LYNN SIRES, WAS ALSO ARRESTED. THE FELONY DRUG CHARGES WERE LATER DROPPED BY A JUDGE, FOLLOWING WEILAND’S STINT IN REHAB. HERE’S WEILAND AND STP LIVE FROM THE HOUSE OF BLUES CIRCA 2000.

ON THIS DATE 44 YEARS AGO QUEEN RELEASED THE SINGLE ‘YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND’ IN THE US. THE TRACK REACHED # 16 ON THE AMERICAN CHARTS AND WAS WRITTEN BY BASSIST JOHN DEACON. THIS IS WHAT DEACON HAD TO SAY IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE BBC ON THE WRITING OF THE SONG: “Well, Freddie didn’t like the electric piano, so I took it home and I started to learn on the electric piano and basically that’s the song that came out you know when I was learning to play the piano. It was written on that instrument and it sounds best on that. You know, often on the instrument that you wrote the song on.”

R.I.P. DIO-KEITH RICHARDS 9 LIVES

MANY CONSIDER RONNIE JAMES DIO ONE OF THE BEST METAL SINGERS OF ALL TIME. HE FRONTED OR FOUNDED SOME OF THE GREAT BANDS OF OUR TIME INCLUDING RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, DIO, AND HEAVEN AND HELL. HE IS ALSO KNOWN FOR POPULARIZING THE “METAL HORNS” HAND GESTURE. TEN YEARS AGO RONNIE JAMES DIO PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 67. THE MOST TRAGIC THING ABOUT DIO’S DEATH FROM STOMACH CANCER IN 2010 IS IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. DIO HAD NOT BEEN TESTED FOR STOMACH OR COLORECTAL CANCER FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS. ( THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RECOMMENDS A COLONOSCOPY EVERY 10 YEARS OVER THE AGE OF 50). GEEZER BUTLER, DIO’S BANDMATE IN SABBATH AND HEAVEN AND HELL STATED IN THE BOOK “LOUDER THAN HELL: THE DEFINITIVE ORAL HISTORY OF HEAVY METAL”:

“All the doctors said if he’d have gone in [for a colonoscopy] a year earlier or two years earlier, they could have treated him, If it had been stage one they could have dealt with it. But by the time Ronnie was diagnosed, he had stage four cancer, which was inoperable. The doctor hinted that it was just a matter of time and there was nothing they could do. It’s really upsetting to think about that, and hopefully it will encourage people who need to have a check up to get it done.”

ONE OF A KIND WITH A BOOMING VOICE AND GREAT STAGE PRESENCE, THERE HAD NEVER BEFORE BEEN ANYONE LIKE RONNIE JAMES DIO, AND THERE NEVER WILL BE AGAIN. HERE’S DIO WITH ONE OF HIS BEST.

ALSO ON THIS DATE TWENTY TWO YEARS AGO TODAY, KEITH RICHARDS WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER HE FELL OFF A CHAIR WHILE REACHING FOR A BOOK IN HIS CONNECTICUT HOME, INJURING HIS CHEST AND RIBS.  AT LEAST THIS TIME HE DIDN’T HURT HIMSELF FALLING HEAD FIRST OFF OF A COCONUT TREE ! HERE’S SOME VINTAGE KEITH RICHARDS WITH THE ROLLING STONES.
