LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-FEB 4, 2019…IT WAS 1980 AND ‘I CAN’T TELL YOU WHY’ WAS THE FIRST SINGLE TAKEN FROM ‘THE LONG RUN’ TO BE RELEASED AS A SINGLE. THE SONG WAS WRITTEN BY TIMOTHY B SCHMIT, DON HENLEY, AND GLENN FREY. IT ALSO MARKED THE FIRST EAGLES SONG TO FEATURE SCHMIT ON LEAD VOCALS. GLENN FREY ALSO PLAYED LEAD GUITAR ON THE SONG, WHICH WAS RARE BECAUSE DON FELDER OR JOE WALSH USUALLY PLAYED LEAD, WHICH RELEGATED FREY TO RHYTHM.
IN AN INTERVIEW WITH BOB COSTAS, GLENN FREY SAID THAT ‘ONE OF THESE NIGHTS’ AND ‘I CAN’T TELL YOU WHY’ ARE THE TWO SONGS HE HELPED WRITE HE WOULD PUT INTO A TIME CAPSULE TO REPRESENT THE EAGLES BEST WORK.
THE SONG ALSO MARKED THE LAST EAGLES SONG TO MAKE THE TOP TEN SINGLES CHART. THE ALBUM WAS ALSO THE LAST EAGLES STUDIO ALBUM UNTIL THE GROUP REFORMED IN 1994.
