LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-FEB 27, 2019…ON THIS DATE IN 1971, FIVE MONTHS AFTER HER DEATH, JANIS JOPLIN STARTED A 5 MONTH RUN AT NUMBER ONE ON THE US ALBUM CHARTS WITH HER SECOND AND FINAL SOLO ALBUM ‘PEARL’. JOPLIN SANG ON ALL THE TRACKS EXCEPT FOR ‘BURIED ALIVE IN THE BLUES’ WHICH REMAINED ON THE ALBUM AS AN INSTRUMENTAL BECAUSE JOPLIN DIED BEFORE SHE COULD ADD HER VOCALS TO THE FULL TILT BOOGIE TRACK.
THE SESSIONS FOR PEARL STARTED IN SEPTEMBER OF 1970, AND ENDED WITH HER UNTIMELY DEATH IN OCTOBER. THE A CAPELLA ‘MERCEDES BENZ’ WAS THE LAST SONG SHE RECORDED. IT WAS RECORDED ON OCTOBER 1,1970. SHE WAS FOUND DEAD 3 DAYS LATER, THE CAUSE OF DEATH RULED A HEROIN OVERDOSE.
THE ALBUM PEARL WAS CERTIFIED QUADRUPLE PLATINUM.
