LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-APRIL 5, 2020…JUST 8 YEARS TO THE DAY AFTER DEATH OF KURT COBAIN, ANOTHER SEATTLE GRUNGE ERA MUSICIAN DIED OF THE EXACT SAME WAY. IN 2002 LAYNE STALEY OF ALICE AND CHAINS DIED OF A HEROIN OVERDOSE. HIS BODY WAS FOUND MORE THAN TWO WEEKS LATER ON APRIL 19TH AT HIS HOME IN SEATTLE. A SEATTLE POLICE SPOKESPERSON AT THE TIME OF THE DISCOVERY ANNOUNCED THAT HEROIN PARAPHERNALIA WAS FOUND AT THE SCENE. LAYNE STALEY DIED AT THE AGE OF 34. STALEY HAD A LONG HISTORY OF DRUG USE, AND WROTE ABOUT IT IN HIS MUSIC. STALEY ADMITTED THAT HE WROTE ‘MAN IN THE BOX’ WHEN “HE WAS STONED.” OTHER LAYNE STALEY SONGS ABOUT DRUGS ARE ‘JUNKHEAD’ ‘ANGRY CHAIR’ ‘HATE TO FEEL’ & ‘FROGS’. LAYNE STALEY’S DEATH WAS SUCH A WASTE OF TALENT AND ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A GREAT MUSICIAN THAT DIED WAY TOO YOUNG.
