LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES SEPTEMBER 24, 2019- ON THIS DATE 28 YEARS AGO NIRVANA RELEASED ‘NEVERMIND’ AND BECAME ONE OF THE BIGGEST BANDS OVERNIGHT. HERE ARE SOME LITTLE KNOWN FACTS SURROUNDING ‘NEVERMIND’:
-The baby boy on the cover of ‘Nevermind’ was almost a girl. The photographer did two shoots and really liked a photograph he took with a baby girl, but the band’s record label insisted “we want the dick.”
-‘Nevermind’ was originally titled ‘Sheep.’ The title was a Cobain manifesto on conformity.
– If you look closely Kiss actually appear on the back cover of the album. The rear photo is actually a collage Cobain made up of Dante’s Inferno paintings, Chim Chim the monkey and if you look very closely you’ll see miniature figures of Kiss, one of his favorite bands growing up.
– The announcer in the ‘In Bloom’ video is former ‘People’s Court’ host Doug Llewelyn
– Nirvana were kicked out of their own ‘Nevermind’ release party. The bash at a tiny Seattle club got messy as Cobain and his the band showed up drunk and started tossing around a watermelon filled with ranch dressing from the buffet. The group were eventually shown the door and kicked out of their own party.
-Nirvana almost split up after an argument over ‘Nevermind’ royalties. Six months after the album dropped, and a month after his marriage to Courtney Love, Cobain suddenly demanded a much larger slice of the royalties, and he demanded it take effect retroactively. Novoselic and Grohl almost quit the band in protest.
-‘Nevermind’ was the album that knocked Michael Jackson’s ‘Dangerous’ off the top of the charts.
-‘Nevermind’ spent a total of 252 weeks on the Billboard 200 albums charts.
