PINK FLOYD-LEARNING TO FLY

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES SEPTEMBER 14, 2019-PINK FLOYD RELEASED THE FIRST SINGLE ‘LEARNING TO FLY’ FROM THEIR 13TH ALBUM ‘A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON’ ON SEPTEMBER 14TH 1987. THIS WAS THE FIRST PINK FLOYD ALBUM WITHOUT THEIR FOUNDING MEMBER ROGER WATERS. ROGERS AND DAVID GILMOUR HAD BEEN SEETHING AT EACH OTHER FOR YEARS, BUT THEY MANAGED TO PUT THEIR DISDAIN OF EACH OTHER ASIDE UNTIL 1983 WHEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE. WHEN THE FLOYD ALBUM ‘THE FINAL CUT’ WAS RELEASED IN ‘83, ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE GROUP WENT THEIR SEPARATE WAYS, WITH GILMOUR AND WATERS BOTH RELEASING SOLO ALBUMS IN 1984.

IN 1986 GILMOUR RECONVENED PINK FLOYD WITHOUT ROGER WATERS, AND WATERS WENT BANANAS. HE THOUGHT HE WOULD BE THE ONE TO DECIDE IF THE BAND WOULD CONTINUE. THE LAWYERS GOT RICH AS WATERS TOOK PINK FLOYD TO COURT, AND EVENTUALLY A SETTLEMENT WAS WORKED OUT.

‘LEARNING TO FLY’ IN THIS CONTEXT, IS THE GROUP FIGURING OUT HOW TO FLY WITHOUT ROGER WATERS.
