LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES- OCT 6, 2019….FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAY THE BEATLES RELEASED THE SINGLE ‘SOMETHING’ AS THE A-SIDE OF A BEATLES 45. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME A GEORGE HARRISON SONG WAS GIVEN THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE A-SIDE. THE B-SIDE WAS THE LENNON/MCCARTNEY TRACK ‘COME TOGETHER.’ ‘SOMETHING’ REACHED NUMBER ONE ON THE SINGLES CHART IN NOVEMBER. HARRISON ACTUALLY OFFERED THE SONG TO JOE COCKER PRIOR TO THE BEATLES, DUE TO THE DIFFICULTY HE FACED GETTING MORE THAN TWO SONGS ON EACH BEATLES ALBUM. IT IS DESCRIBED AS A LOVE SONG TO PATTI BOYD, HARRISON’S FIRST WIFE, ALTHOUGH HARRISON OFFERED DIFFERING SOURCES OF INSPIRATION IN LATER INTERVIEWS:
“I had written Something on the piano during the recording of the White Album. There was a period during that album when we were all in different studios doing different things trying to get it finished, and I used to take some time out. So I went into an empty studio and wrote Something”.
JOHN LENNON STATED THAT ‘SOMETHING’ WAS THE BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM ‘ABBEY ROAD.’
