LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JAN 11, 2020-ON JANUARY 11 1980, TOM PETTY RELEASED THE SINGLE REFUGEE. IT WAS THE FIRST OF TWO HIT SONGS FROM THE ALBUM ‘DAMN THE TORPEDOES’. PETTY WROTE THIS SONG BECAUSE HE WAS PISSED OFF AT HIS RECORD COMPANY FOR TRYING TO SELL HIS RECORDING CONTRACT TO ANOTHER COMPANY WITHOUT TELLING THE BAND. HE WAS SO UPSET WITH ‘ABC RECORDS’ IT SET THE TONE OF THE RECORD ON ‘DAMN THE TORPEDOES’ AND SPECIFICALLY ‘REFUGEE.’ THE BAND PERFORMED THIS SONG ON THEIR FIRST SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PERFORMANCE, AND ACTUALLY SHOT A MUSIC VIDEO FOR REFUGEE BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T WANT TO APPEAR ON THE MERV GRIFFIN SHOW,
R.I.P. TOM PETTY. YOU WILL LIVE ON FOREVER WITH YOUR MUSIC. HERE’S THE VIDEO FOR REFUGEE
