L.A. WOMAN

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-APR 19, 2019…FORTY EIGHT YEARS AGO THE DOORS RELEASED THEIR 6TH STUDIO ALBUM ‘L.A. WOMAN’ AND THEIR FINAL STUDIO ALBUM TO FEATURE LEAD SINGER JIM MORRISON, WHO DIED 3 MONTHS AFTER THE ALBUM’S RELEASE. THIS WAS A GREAT ALBUM, DESPITE THEIR LONGTIME PRODUCER PAUL ROTHCHILD WALKING OUT ON THE BAND. ROTHCHILD ENDED AN EARLY LISTENING SESSION BY INSULTING THE DOOR’S MUSICAL DIRECTION AND WALKED OUT LEAVING THE GROUP WITHOUT A PRODUCER.

AS A RESULT, THE BAND CO-PRODUCED THE ALBUM WITH LONGTIME SOUND ENGINEER BRUCE BOTNICK. THE ALBUM CONTAINED THE HIT ‘LOVE HER MADLY’ WHICH PRECEDED THE ALBUMS RELEASE, AND ‘RIDERS ON THE STORM’.

IT ALSO BOASTED THE TITLE TRACK, A SONG RAY MANZAREK ONCE EXPLAINED AS:

“A song about driving madly down the LA freeway – either heading into LA or going out on the 405 up to San Francisco. You’re a beatnik on the road, like Kerouac and Neal Cassady, barreling down the freeway as fast as you can go.”

“Morrison recorded his vocals in the studio bathroom to get a fuller sound. He spent a lot of time in there anyway because of all the beer he drank during the sessions.”

LAYNE STALEY

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-APR 19, 2019- ON THIS DATE IN 2002, LAYNE STALEY OF ALICE AND CHAINS WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS APARTMENT IN SEATTLE WASHINGTON. AFTER NO ONE HAD HEARD FROM HIM FOR 2 WEEKS, POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO BREAK DOWN THE DOOR TO HIS APARTMENT. INSIDE THEY FOUND STALEY’S BODY SURROUNDED BY DRUGS, SQUALOR AND DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. STALEY’S 6’1” BODY WAS REDUCED TO 86 POUNDS, AND IN HIS HAND WAS A SYRINGE LOADED WITH ANOTHER DOSE OF HEROIN AND COCAINE. THE AUTOPSY AND TOXICOLOGY REPORT PLACED THE DATE OF HIS DEATH, WHICH WAS RULED ACCIDENTAL, AT APRIL 5. LAYNE STALEY DIED AT THE AGE OF 34.

I READ A GREAT ARTICLE ON STALEY’S LAST DAYS IN “GUITAR WORLD” MAGAZINE. THEY TALKED TO RANDY BIRO, A MUSICIAN WHO CONTRIBUTED VOCALS TO ALICE IN CHAINS ‘JAR OF FLIES’ EP. BIRO WAS AT A PARTY AND SOMEONE TOLD HIM THAT LAYNE STALEY WANTED TO SEE HIM. HERE’S HIS RECOLLECTION OF THAT EVENT:

“Great, where is he?”

“He’s right behind you.”

Biro turned around. “I’m looking past this really skinny, fucked-up looking guy trying to see where Layne is, and it was Layne. I felt really awkward.”

“He had a baseball cap on, he had glasses down to the end of his nose, and not very many teeth. It shocked me at first. It looked like death. It was gross.” Jim Elmer doesn’t know exactly when Layne’s tooth loss started, but thinks it was around 1995 or 1996 and said it was a gradual process.

Layne invited Biro to check out his condo, which was around the corner from the bar. He described Layne as being very proud about his home. Layne had a massive rear-projection TV. “The fucking thing was huge. I’d never seen a TV that big. He had gotten it through the label some way, and all he did was sit there and get high and play video games all day.”

Biro, who was clean, asked, “Wow, have you got anything?”—referring to drugs.

“Yeah, but I’m not gonna give it to you.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re clean. I’m not gonna be part of this. If you need to go do that, you do it somewhere else. I don’t want to be part of it. I don’t want you to end up like me again.” That was the last time Biro saw him.

LAYNE STALEY’S DEATH WAS SUCH A WASTE OF TALENT AND ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A GREAT MUSICIAN THAT DIED WAY TOO YOUNG.

LINDA MCCARTNEY

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-APR 17, 2019-TWENTY ONE YEARS AGO LINDA MCCARTNEY DIED AFTER A LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER AT THE AGE OF 57.

LINDA MARRIED PAUL MCCARTNEY IN 1969 WHEN SHE WAS WORKING AS A PHOTOGRAPHER. AS WELL AS BEING A MEMBER OF THE WINGS, SHE BECAME AN ANIMAL RIGHTS CAMPAIGNER AND LAUNCHED HER OWN BRAND

OF FROZEN VEGETARIAN FOOD.

THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE TO LINDA CAME FROM PAUL HIMSELF WHO SAID:

“As a mother, she was the best. We always said that all we wanted for the kids was that they would grow up to have good hearts, and they have.”

MCCARTNEY’S FIRST SOLO ALBUM

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-APR 17, 2019…49 YEARS AGO PAUL MCCARTNEY WAS UNSURE OF HIS FUTURE AND RELEASED HIS FIRST SOLO ALBUM ‘MCCARTNEY’. SEVEN MONTHS PRIOR TO THE RELEASE OF THIS RECORD JOHN LENNON TOLD THE REST OF THE BEATLES HE WANTED “A DIVORCE” FROM THE GROUP. THE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM LENNON WAS NOT MADE OFFICIAL OR PUBLIC DUE TO BUSINESS REASONS.

MCCARTNEY WITHDREW TO HIS FARM AND ENDED UP RECORDING THIS ALBUM AT HIS HOME USING ONLY 4 TRACK TAPE, AND PLAYING EVERY INSTRUMENT HIMSELF.

WHEN MCCARTNEY RELEASED THIS ALBUM, HE INCLUDED A ‘SELF INTERVIEW’ AS AN INSERT IN THE ALBUM, THAT IN ESSENCE, ANNOUNCED TO THE WORLD HE WAS LEAVING THE BEATLES.

THE NEWS OF THE BREAK-UP CAUSED CRITICS TO TRASH THE RECORD. HOWEVER THE INTEREST IN HIS SOLO CAREER HELPED DRIVE THE ALBUM TO #1 ON THE CHARTS.

THE ALBUM CONTAINED THE STUDIO VERSION OF THE LOVE SONG ‘MAYBE I’M AMAZED’. MCCARTNEY DEDICATED THIS SONG TO HIS WIFE LINDA, WHO HAD HELPED HIM GET THROUGH THE BREAKUP OF THE BEATLES. THIS SONG WAS NEVER ISSUED AS A SINGLE. THE LIVE VERSION WAS A HUGE HIT YEARS LATER WHEN IT WAS PICKED AS A SINGLE FROM THE ‘WINGS OVER AMERICA’ ALBUM.
