LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-MARCH 27, 2020…ON THIS DATE IN 1979 IAN HUNTER, THE FORMER LEAD SINGER OF “MOTT THE HOOPLE”, RELEASED HIS MOST SUCCESSFUL SOLO ALBUM ‘YOU’RE NEVER ALONE WITH A SCHIZOPHRENIC’. THE TITLE WAS CO-PRODUCER MICK RONSON’S IDEA THAT HE HIMSELF PLANNED ON USING FOR ONE OF HIS SOLO ALBUMS. HUNTER LOVED THE TITLE SO MUCH, HE OFFERED RONSON CO-WRITING CREDITS ON THE SONG ‘JUST ANOTHER NIGHT’ JUST TO USE ON HIS RECORD. THE ALBUM CONTAINED SOME GREAT TRACKS INCLUDING ‘CLEVELAND ROCKS’ ‘BASTARD’ ‘SHIPS’ AND ‘JUST ANOTHER NIGHT.’ LATER BARRY MANILOW EVEN COVERED THE SONG ‘SHIPS’ WHICH BECAME A TOP TEN HIT FOR MANILOW. LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-MARCH 27, 2020…THIRTY SIX YEARS AGO THE SCORPIONS HIT PAY DIRT WITH ‘LOVE AT FIRST STING’. THIS WAS THE 9TH STUDIO ALBUM FROM THE SCORPIONS, AND IT WAS HUGE. THE RECORD WAS DRIVEN BY 3 HUGE SINGLES ‘BIG CITY NIGHTS’ ‘STILL LOVING YOU’ AND THEIR SIGNATURE SONG ‘ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE.’ IN AN INTERVIEW RUDOLPH SCHENKER SAID:
“I think ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’ is a perfect rock anthem, which talks about attitude and sexuality. It’s very important to recognize the tension between the verses and the chorus. I think Klaus (Meine) went over the lyrics around eight or nine times because the first lyrics of the song went something like ‘blah blah blah blah.’ And we said, ‘No! The song is not feeling right.’ But at the ninth or tenth time, it came. The lyric goes: ‘The bitch is hungry, she needs to tell, so give her inches and feed her well.’ This was the tension between the ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’ chorus, and the words to the verses. This is what makes the song great. And the funny thing is, the girls, when they’re talking about ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane,’ they say, ‘Oh, I love your song ‘Rock Me Like A Hurricane’.

AFTER TAKING A BREAK IN 1995 THE BAND HOLED UP AT A MANSION IN SANTA BARBARA WHERE THEY RECORDED THE ALBUM. ‘TINY MUSIC’ PRODUCED 3 HIT SINGLES ON THE ROCK CHARTS, BUT SALES OF THE ALBUM STALLED WHEN STP CANCELLED A GOOD PORTION OF THEIR TOUR TO ENABLE SCOTT WEILAND TO GO TO REHAB. EVEN WITH THE SETBACK IN TOURING, THE ALBUM SOLD 2 MILLION COPIES (STILL SHORT OF THE OTHER 2 ALBUMS BUT IMPRESSIVE COMMERCIALLY NONETHELESS). LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-MARCH 26, 2020…HAPPY 72ND BIRTHDAY TO AEROSMITH’S STEVEN TYLER. TYLER IS ONE OF ROCK’S GREATEST SHOWMEN. FROM THE EARLY SUCCESS OF AEROSMITH WITH HITS LIKE ‘DREAM ON’ ‘WALK THIS WAY’ AND ‘SWEET EMOTION’ THROUGH THE ROUGH PATCH OF HIS DRUG ADDICTION AND EVENTUALLY THE AEROSMITH COMEBACK OF ‘LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR’ AND ‘DUDE LOOKS LIKE A LADY, TYLER HAS DONE IT ALL. THIS GUY IS A FREAKIN’ SURVIVOR. HIS CAREER HAS SPANNED OVER 5 DECADES AND HE’S EXPERIENCED EVERY HIGH AND EVERY LOW. EPIC RECORD FROM THIN LIZZY
LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-MARCH 26, 2020…On this date, one of my favorite albums, “Jailbreak” by Thin Lizzy was released. Jailbreak is the sixth studio album by Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy, released in 1976. It proved to be the band’s commercial breakthrough in the US, and the only Thin Lizzy album with a certification (in this case, Gold) in that country. The singles include ‘Jailbreak’ and the band’s breakthrough song ‘The Boys Are Back in Town’. This song was inspired by Thin Lizzy’s fans. The group wrote it after noticing that their shows were full of working-class guys looking to get out and have some fun. Their fans also had a tendency to drink heavily. Thin Lizzy were surprised when this became their breakthrough hit – because they hadn’t wanted it on their Jailbreak album. Guitarist Scott Gorham said in an interview: “We were playing in some club in the US when our manager came in and said, ‘Well, looks like we’ve got a hit.’ We were like, ‘Which song?’ Seriously, we didn’t have any idea at all which song it was that had taken off for us.To tell you the truth, we weren’t initially going to put ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ on the Jailbreak album at all,” he continued. “Back then you picked 10 songs and went with those because of the time restrictions of vinyl. We recorded 15 songs, and of the 10 we picked, that wasn’t one of them. But then the management heard it and said, ‘No, there’s something really good about this song.’ Although back then, it didn’t yet have the twin guitar parts on it.”
Here’s one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded, the title track, “Jailbreak” , live from 1976.
