AEROSMITH AND GUNS N’ ROSES AT CONCORD

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES SEPTEMBER 8 2019- THIRTY ONE YEARS AGO GUNS N’ ROSES WAS THE WARM UP ACT FOR AEROSMITH AT THE CONCORD PAVILION. GN’R WERE ON THEIR “APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION” TOUR AND GAVE US A TASTE OF THINGS TO COME. AEROSMITH WAS ON THEIR “PERMANENT VACATION” TOUR AND THIS WAS THE GROUP’S FIRST TOUR SINCE COMPLETING DRUG REHAB. GUNS N’ ROSES WERE NOTORIOUS FOR THEIR CONSUMPTION OF DRUGS AT THIS TIME. AEROSMITH ASKED GN’R NOT TO DO DRUGS IN THEIR PRESENCE, SO THEY WOULDN’T RELAPSE.

GUNS N’ ROSES WERE LIMITED TO A SEVEN SONG SET. THIS IS THEIR SETLIST FROM CONCORD:

“When we toured with them, I’d go out to watch and they’d sound fucking amazing!”

KEITH MOON

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES SEPTEMBER 7, 2019- THE WHO’S KEITH MOON DIED ON THIS DATE 41 YEARS AGO. MOON, WHO HAD EARNED THE NICKNAME “MOON THE LOON” WAS KNOWN TO ABUSE PRESCRIPTIONS AND WAS ADDICTED TO MIXING HIS PILLS WITH ALCOHOL, AND WAS PASSING OUT ONSTAGE DURING WHO CONCERTS. AT ONE POINT HE WAS DOING THIS WITH SUCH REGULARITY THAT THE GROUP WAS CONSIDERING DROPPING HIM FROM THE LINEUP. TO AVOID BEING KICKED OUT OF THE BAND, MOON SOUGHT TREATMENT AND WAS PRESCRIBED HEMINEVRIN, TO CURB ALCOHOL CRAVINGS. THE NIGHT BEFORE HE DIED MOON ATTENDED A PARTY WHERE GUESTS ALL “remember Keith being in good spirits and surprisingly sober.” HE LEFT THE PARTY EARLY AND BEFORE GOING TO BED TOOK HIS USUAL “glass of water and bucket of pills.”

THE NEXT AFTERNOON HIS GIRLFRIEND WENT TO WAKE HIM UP AND DISCOVERED MOON WASN’T BREATHING. HIS DOCTOR AND AN AMBULANCE WAS CALLED, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. MOON HAD BEEN DEAD FOR HOURS. THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF DEATH WAS LISTED AS HEMINEVRIN OVERDOSE, WITHOUT SUICIDAL INTENTIONS. AN AUTOPSY LATER REVEALED A TOTAL OF 26 UNDISSOLVED PILLS WERE FOUND IN HIS STOMACH.

MOON WAS ONLY 32 YEARS OF AGE. WEIRD TRIVIA, MOON ACTUALLY DIED AT THE AGE OF 32 IN THE SAME TOWN HOME CASS ELLIOT HAD PASSED AWAY IN, ALSO AT THE AGE OF 32 ! WTF!!!

THIS IS A KEITH MOON DOCUMENTARY THAT CENTERS ON THE LAST PART OF HIS LIFE

WARREN ZEVON

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES SEPTEMBER 7, 2019-IT WAS ON THIS DATE IN 2003 WARREN ZEVON PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 56. ZEVON, WHO HAD A FEAR OF GOING TO DOCTORS, HAD NO CHOICE TO GO IN FOR A CHECK UP AFTER EXPERIENCING BOUTS OF DIZZINESS AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS INOPERABLE MESOTHELIOMA, A FORM OF LUNG CANCER THAT DEVELOPS AS A RESULT OF EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS.

HERE’S THE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR ‘WEREWOLVES OF LONDON’. THEY REALLY WENT ALL OUT ON THE SPECIAL EFFECTS FOR THE WEREWOLF 🙂

AC/DC IN OAKLAND

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES SEPTEMBER 6, 2019- THE SECOND OF TWO BAY AREA SHOWS. ON SEPTEMBER 5TH, 1980 THE “BACK IN BLACK” TOUR STOPPED OFF AT THE COW PALACE, ON THE SIXTH AC/DC CROSSED THE BAY TO A SOLD OUT OAKLAND ARENA. ‘BACK IN BLACK’ WAS THE FIRST ALBUM THE BAND RELEASED AFTER THE DEATH OF LEAD SINGER BON SCOTT. THIS WAS BRIAN JOHNSON’S FIRST TOUR WITH THE GROUP AND TO HEAR JOHNSON TELL IT, HE WAS “NERVOUS AS S**T.” THE FIRST CONCERT OF THE TOUR HE SANG THE SAME LYRICS TO TWO SONGS IN A ROW.

JOHNSON SAID:

“The first thing I did, we did two songs, ‘Bad Boy Boogie’ and the other one, I sang the same lyrics to both songs. I was so nervous, I sang the first song and then I sang the second one with the same words. I couldn’t hear anything. I could see the audience going ‘he must be Avant guard. He is singing anything he wants”. I finished it and thought ‘oh God what have I done?’. Malcolm looked at me and went “what the fuck was that?”.

THANKFULLY, BY THE TIME THE BAND PLAYED THEIR TWO BAY AREA CONCERTS, JOHNSON HAD THE SONGS MEMORIZED AND LOST HIS NERVOUSNESS.

HERE IS THE SETLIST FROM THE CONCERT IN OAKLAND:
