STORIES-BROTHER LOUIE

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JUNE 18, 2019…ON THIS DATE IN 1973 THE ‘STORIES’ RELEASED A COVER OF ‘BROTHER LOUIE’, A SONG THAT HAD BEEN A HUGE HIT IN ENGLAND BY THE BAND HOT CHOCOLATE. THE SONG IS ABOUT A ROMANCE BETWEEN A WHITE MAN AND A BLACK WOMAN. ERROL BROWN THE LEAD SINGER FOR HOT CHOCOLATE, CO-WROTE THE SONG. BROWN WAS BORN IN JAMAICA AND WAS RAISED BY A SINGLE MOTHER WHO MOVED HIM TO ENGLAND WHEN HE WAS YOUNG. HE TOLD “MELODY MAKER” THAT THIS SONG WAS INSPIRED BY REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES:

"That comes from early dating in a place where there's a majority of white people. That was fine for us because we grew up and rubbed shoulders with other nationalities so it wasn't a heavy thing. But in those days a lot of white parents never had anything to do with black people. It was understandable – they just didn't know what was going on, apart from what they read in books or saw on TV."

THE SPOKEN INTERLUDES IN THE HOT CHOCOLATE SONG WERE PRETTY CONTROVERSIAL, USING GRAPHIC RACIAL EPITHETS THAT WERE ENOUGH TO SCARE MANY RADIO STATIONS AWAY FROM PLAYING THE RECORD.

APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS AFTER THE HOT CHOCOLATE VERSION, THE STORIES RECORDED THE SONG AND RELEASED IT AS A SINGLE. THEIR VERSION LEFT OUT THE SPOKEN PARTS AND A VERSE WHERE LOUIE MEETS THE GIRLS PARENTS. THE STORIES VERSION WENT TO # 1 AND STAYED ON THE CHARTS FOR CLOSE TO 4 AND A HALF MONTHS. IT WAS THE ONLY HIT FOR THE STORIES.

HERE’S ‘BROTHER LOUIE’ WITH THE ‘STORIES’ PERFORMING ON THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL CIRCA 1973

VAN HALEN-PANAMA

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JUNE 18, 2019…THIRTY FIVE YEARS AGO VAN HALEN RELEASED ‘PANAMA’ THE THIRD SINGLE FROM THE ALBUM ‘1984’

SOME TRIVIA CONCERNING VAN HALEN’S PANAMA:

-This was one of the last Van Halen songs recorded with David Lee Roth as lead singer. -Some of the scenes in the video where David Lee Roth is doing fun stuff like riding in a convertible, was footage shot for the "Jump" video but not used. Both videos were co-directed by Pete Angelus, who also did "Hot For Teacher."

-During the bridge of the song, after Roth says, "I can barely see the road from the heat comin' off it," you can hear the sound of a car revving in the background. The car is Eddie Van Halen's 1972 Lamborghini Miura S. Van Halen has stated that he is an avid car collector.

-According to David Lee Roth, he wrote the song with a stripper in mind that he met in Arizona. The song came about after an interview Roth gave in the early '80s; the interviewer accused him of only writing lyrics about sex, drugs, and fast cars. Sometime either during or after the interview, Diamond Dave realized he'd never actually written a song about fast cars, so he started working on the lyrics to "Panama," which he later admitted he had been writing about a stripper he knew without realizing it. The finished lyrics were inspired by both the stripper and the car.

-In the video, Michael Anthony played a bass shaped like a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey, which the company custom made for him. This was a product placement coup, since MTV had a strict policy against advertising within videos - they made ZZ Top remove a shot of Schlitz beer from one of their clips before they would air it. By integrating the product into Anthony's bass, there was no good way to remove it, and MTV wasn't about to turn down a Van Halen video in 1984.

-This was one of the first songs recorded at Eddie Van Halen's 5150 studios. "5150" is California police code for a mentally unstable person causing a disturbance.

-The album cover, which showed a baby on the cover smoking a cigarette, caused a bit of controversy. Some record stores refused to stock it.

HE FIRST GAINED WORLDWIDE SUCCESS WITH THE BEATLES, CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND INFLUENTIAL GROUPS IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC. AFTER THE GROUP DISBANDED IN 1970, HE PURSUED A SOLO CAREER AND FORMED THE BAND WINGS.

DAY ON THE GREEN #2 1978

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JUNE 17, 2019…BILL GRAHAM’S “DAY ON THE GREEN” CONCERTS WERE EPIC CONCERTS THAT REALLY WERE THE PROTOTYPES FOR FESTIVAL SHOWS. STAGED ON THE LAWN OF THE OAKLAND COLISEUM, THE DAY ON THE GREEN CONCERTS WERE A SUMMER SERIES OF CONCERTS THAT GRAHAM STARTED IN 1973 AND THEY CONTINUED UNTIL SHORTLY AFTER HIS DEATH AS A RESULT OF A HELICOPTER CRASH IN 1991. FORTY ONE YEARS AGO THE BAY AREA WAS TREATED TO ONE OF THESE MEGA CONCERTS.

THE LINEUP INCLUDED THE STEVE MILLER BAND, BOB SEGER, RONNIE MONTROSE, AND TOBY BEAU.

BTW IN 1978 THE COST OF A TICKET FOR A DAY ON THE GREEN WAS $12.50.

HERE’S SEGER WITH A LIVE PERFORMANCE OF “STILL THE SAME” FROM 1978.
