THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JUNE 16, 2019…ON THIS DATE IN 1972 DAVID BOWIE RELEASED ‘THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS’

THE ALBUM IS A LOOSE CONCEPT ALBUM BASED ON BOWIE’S ALTER EGO ZIGGY STARDUST, A FICTIONAL BISEXUAL ROCK STAR WHO ACTS AS A MESSSENGER FOR EXTRATERRISTERAL BEINGS. BEFORE THE ALBUM’S RELEASE, BOWIE TOLD AN INTERVIEWER:

“What you have there on that album when it does finally come out, is a story which doesn’t really take place, it’s just a few little scenes from the life of a band called Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, who could feasibly be the last band on Earth—it could be within the last five years of Earth. I’m not at all sure. Because I wrote it in such a way that I just dropped the numbers into the album in any order that they cropped up. It depends on which state you listen to it in.”

IT WAS BOWIE’S FIFTH ALBUM AND IT WAS HUGE. AS OF 2016 THE ALBUM HAD SOLD OVER 7.5 MILLION COPIES. IT ALSO WAS SELECTED FOR PRESERVATION IN THE NATIONAL RECORDING REGISTRY BEING DEEMED “CULTURALLY, HISTORICALLY, OR ARTISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT” BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.

THE ALBUM FEATURED ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOWIE SONGS

WHITESNAKE-HERE I GO AGAIN

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JUNE 15, 2019…HERE I GO AGAIN IS A SINGLE THAT WAS ACTUALLY RECORDED 3 TIMES WITH 3 SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT VERSIONS.

THE ORIGINAL ‘HERE I GO AGAIN’ WAS INITIALLY RELEASED ON THE 1982 WHITESNAKE ALBUM 'SAINTS AND SINNERS’. DAVID COVERDALE RE-RECORDED IT AND RE-MIXED THE SONG IN 1987 FOR THE SELF TITLED ALBUM ‘WHITESNAKE’. THE GROUP THEN WENT BACK INTO THE STUDIO FOR ANOTHER “RADIO-MIX” VERSION AND IT THAT BECAME A MONSTER HIT, BECOMING A NUMBER ONE SINGLE IN OCTOBER OF 1987. THE SONG WAS ALSO RANKED AS #17 ON VH1’S LIST OF THE “100 GREATEST SONGS OF THE 80’S.”

THE SONG DOCUMENTS THE BREAKDOWN OF HIS FIRST MARRIAGE. I CAN’T THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO GET OVER HIS FIRST MARRIAGE THAN MARRY THE MODEL THAT WAS WRITHING ALL OVER THE JAGUAR CARS IN THE VIDEO FOR THIS SONG. HE MARRIED TAWNY KITAEN IN 1989 (THEY WERE DIVORCED 2 YEARS LATER).

THE VIDEO WAS GREAT ! HERE’S WHITESNAKE WITH TAWNY KITAEN AND THE VIDEO THAT TOOK OVER MTV

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN-TEXAS FLOOD

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JUNE 13, 2019…THIRTY SIX YEARS AGO STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN AND DOUBLE TROUBLE RELEASED THE DEBUT ALBUM ‘TEXAS FLOOD’

STEVIE AND THE BOYS HAD BEEN A LIVE SENSATION AROUND TEXAS AND PUT IN AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AT THE MONTREUX FILM FESTIVAL IN 1982 WHERE THEY CAUGHT THE EARS OF DAVID BOWIE AND JACKSON BROWNE. BROWNE OFFERED THE GROUP FREE USE OF HIS RECORDING STUDIO IN LOS ANGELES, WHERE STEVIE RAY AND DOUBLE TROUBLE RECORDED THIS ALBUM IN 3 DAYS ( KEEP IN MIND THE FIRST DAY WAS SPENT SETTING UP EQUIPMENT) SO IN ESSENCE THE ALBUM WAS RECORDED IN ONLY 2 DAYS, WITH NO OVERDUBS !

THE ALBUM HAS SOLD OVER 2 MILLION COPIES SINCE ITS ORIGINAL RELEASE.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUN E. CARLOS

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JUNE 12, 2019…HE WAS BORN BRAD CARLSON BUT THE WORLD KNOWS HIM AS BUN E. CARLOS, THE ORIGINAL DRUMMER FOR CHEAP TRICK.

NOT ONLY WAS BUN A FANTASTIC DRUMMER, BUT BEHIND THE SCENES HE WAS THE BAND’S CHIEF SET-LISTER AND ARCHIVIST, AND HE MAINTAINED RECORDINGS OF ALL THE BAND’S SHOWS.

HOWEVER THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITHIN THE BAND. ACCORDING THE CARLOS:

“Me and the singer don’t get along very good.”

ONE OF THE MAIN FALL-OUTS WITH LEAD SINGER ROBIN ZANDER HAPPENED IN 2009:

“I don’t like doing 25 songs. I think that just kills the audience. I think the show should be 17, 18, 19 songs and encores. Robin [Zander] wanted to do longer shows….The final straw was, we were offered 100 Sgt. Pepper shows in Las Vegas with a huge back-end. He only wanted to do 50. I said, “Why do you only want to do 50?” He said, “[Whiny voice] I have to take my daughter to kindergarten in September. I don’t want her to go to school in Las Vegas.” I smartly replied something like, “We’re scheduling shows around your daughter’s kindergarten classes?” Then he was like, “Fuck you, you fucking asshole.” Then I just hung up the phone. People tell me to get fucked, I hang up. That happened two days in a row.”

AFTER ANOTHER ARGUMENT IN 2010 CHEAP TRICK ISSUED A STATEMENT THAT CARLOS HAD STOPPED TOURING WITH THE BAND, BUT HE STILL REMAINED A BAND MEMBER. CHEAP TRICK GUITARIST’S SON DAXX WAS NAMED AS THE NEW CHEAP TRICK TOURING DRUMMER.

THE AGREEMENT WORKED OUT GREAT UNTIL HE WAS FORCED TO FILE A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE GROUP IN 2013. ACCORDING TO BUN E CARLOS:

“We just drew up a contract that said, “I don’t tour with the band, but I’m a full member of the band.” We’ve got all these corporations. The touring company said, “If you quit touring, you lose your vote.” I wasn’t going to let that happen. I’m a full member of the band. So we drew up a piece of paper, and a couple years later the check stopped coming. And then I had to sue them in federal court to get my money back. We did a settlement last spring and it’s all hunky dory. That’s the short story.”

ON FEBRUARY 2015 ROBIN ZANDER ANNOUNCED THE LAWSUIT WAS OVER:

“We’ve settled our differences. Bun E.’s a member of the band, but he’s not touring. … We’ve had our differences, but we’re all settled up now and hopefully we can forget about that era. These decisions that Cheap Trick makes, Bun E. is part of.”

SO CARLOS IS A BUSINESS PARTNER IN THE CHEAP TRICK MERCHANDISING BUSINESS AND REMAINS INVOLVED IN THEIR RELEASES OF OLDER MATERIAL WHICH HE PARTICIPATED IN THE RECORDING OF ( KEEP IN MIND HE WAS THE ONE WHO ARCHIVED ALL OF THE BAND’S EARLY MATERIAL)

AS FOR HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BAND, ACCORDING TO BUN:

“any friendship we had went away when I had to file a federal lawsuit. That cost a bucket of fucking money. Going after these guys wasn’t pleasant. The friendship sort of frittered away there.”
