WE’RE AN AMERICAN BAND

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JULY 15, 2019…IT WAS ON THIS DATE IN 1973 GRAND FUNK RELEASED THE SINGLE ‘WE’RE AN AMERICAN BAND’. THE SONG CAME AT A CRITICAL TIME FOR THE BAND. IN 1972, THEY LEFT THEIR MANAGER, WERE EMBROILED IN LAWSUITS, AND REALIZED THEY NEEDED A HIT RECORD OR THEIR CAREER WAS “GOING TO GO INTO THE TOILET.” THEIR NEW MANAGER TOLD THEM,

'Why don't you just write songs about what you do: you're out here on the road, you're going to this hotel, you go to different places, there's people, you come into town...'

GRAND FUNK’S DRUMMER THEN WROTE A SONG ABOUT ALL THE LITTLE THINGS THAT WERE HAPPENING TO THE BAND WHILE THEY WERE ON THE ROAD, AND THEY WERE ALL TRUE. DON BREWER EXPLAINED

"Up all night with Freddie King, I've got to tell you, poker's his thing. Freddie King was the opening act for us, the great Blues guitar player from Texas. It always struck me as funny that he would make his band play poker with him every night. We used to sit in on some of the poker games, and that's where that line came from. His band, he'd pay them, and then he'd go win all the money back so they were broke and they'd have to keep playing for him - it was a great deal. A lot of people don't understand the Freddie King part because they don't know who Freddie King is. Anybody who knows about Freddie King immediately picks it up. People who don't say, 'What are you saying, that Focus can't sing?'"

REGARDING THE LINE, “FOUR CHIQUITAS IN OMAHA,” DON BREWER SAID IT WAS A SITUATION THAT TRANSPIRED WHEN THEY CHECKED INTO A HOTEL IN OMAHA, NEBRASKA:

"There were four groupies in the lobby waiting to see the band, Four young chiquitas' sounded a lot better than 'four young groupies' or 'four young girls.'"

The line, "Sweet Sweet Connie was doing her act" is about Connie Hamzy, a famous groupie known as "Sweet Connie." Some of her rumored conquests include Brewer, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Huey Lewis, Peter Criss, and Bill Clinton (when he was governor of Arkansas). This song made her famous, and in 2010 VH1 ran a special about her life. According to Hamzy, she didn't have "the whole band," as stated in the lyrics, but she came pretty close - Mark Farner was a holdout.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JASON BONHAM

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JULY 15, 2019…HAPPY 53RD BIRTHDAY TO JASON BONHAM. JASON, THE SON OF THE GREAT JOHN BONHAM OF LED ZEPPELIN FAME, IS NOW ESTABLISHING HIMSELF AS ONE OF THE GREAT DRUMMERS IN ROCK AND ROLL. HIS FATHER JOHN DIED IN 1980, AND JASON HAS STEPPED IN FROM TIME TO TIME TO KEEP HIS MEMORY ALIVE.

IN 1988 HE TOOK HIS FATHER’S SPOT AT THE FIRST EVER LED ZEPPELIN REUNION AT THE ATLANTIC RECORDS 40TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT.

ON DECEMBER 10TH, 2007 JASON PLAYED DRUMS IN THE MOST ANTICIPATED CONCERT OF ALL TIME, THE LED ZEPPELIN REUNION AT THE O2 ARENA.

HE’S ALSO DONE WORK WITH PAUL RODGERS, SLASH, DAVID GILMOUR, JEFF BECK, UFO, FOREIGNER, AND JOE BONNAMASSA.

MOST RECENTLY HE’S BEEN BUSY WITH HIS OWN PROJECT “JASON BONHAM’S LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE” ( WHICH WAS FORCED TO CHANGE ITS NAME BY ZEPPELIN TO “JASON BONHAM’S LED ZEPPELIN EVENING”)

HE IS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE CIRCLE, SAMMY HAGAR’S SUPERSTAR PROJECT.

THIS IS THE MOST TOUCHING VERSION OF STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN I’VE EVER SEEN. PLANT AND PAGE HAD NO IDEA JASON BONHAM WAS GOING TO BE APPEARING ON THE SONG, AND IT BROUGHT PLANT TO TEARS. AN INCREDIBLE VERSION FROM HEART AND JASON BONHAM

TALKING HEADS-MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD

LAMONT’S MUSIC NOTES-JULY 7, 2019…FORTY ONE YEARS AGO THE TALKING HEADS GAVE US THEIR SECOND STUDIO ALBUM ‘MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD’

THIS ALBUM PRODUCED THE GROUP’S FIRST TOP 30 SINGLE, A COVER OF AL GREEN’S ‘TAKE ME TO THE RIVER’. THIS SONG REALLY PROVED TO BE A BREAKTHROUGH FOR THE GROUP, WHOSE ONLY APPEARANCE ON THE CHARTS WAS ‘PSYCHO KILLER’ WHICH REACHED #92. THEIR RENDITION OF ‘TAKE ME TO THE RIVER’ EARNED THE BAND AN INVITATION TO PERFORM ON “AMERICAN BANDSTAND” WHICH GAVE THE TALKING HEADS THEIR FIRST HUGE TV EXPOSURE.

ACCORDING TO THE TALKING HEADS’ BASSIST TINA WEYMOUTH, THE TITLE OF THE ALBUM CAME ABOUT KIND OF ACCIDENTALLY:

“When we were making this album I remembered this stupid discussion we had about titles for the last album, At that time I said, 'What are we gonna call an album that's just about buildings and food?' And Chris said, 'You call it more songs about buildings and food.”

THE FRONT COVER OF THE ALBUM IS UNIQUE. IT’S AN ACTUAL PHOTOMOSAIC OF THE BAND COMPRISED OF 529 CLOSE UP POLAROID PHOTOGRAPHS.

HERE ARE THE TALKING HEADS WITH A LIVE VERSION OF ‘TAKE ME TO THE RIVER’
